Antarctic and pygmy blue whale subspecies interbreed

Antarctic and pygmy blue whale subspecies may be interbreeding in waters off Antarctica.

The study of whale genetics challenges previous research on blue whale breeding behaviour.

Scientists say whaling, climate change or a combination of these factors may have caused an increase in the proportionate number of pygmy blue whales, which may have led to the subspecies interbreeding.
