Cheek cells maintain immune system status quo

Lab results have found that cloned cheek cells can keep the immune system from using lymphocytes to harm the body.

Lymphocytes – white blood cells – can be used by the immune system to attack insulin-producing cells, or to reject donated organs.

Existing research has focused on stem cells usually harvested from bone marrow.

This research has the potential for cheek cells to aid future therapies for immune system-related deseases.
