Deep brain surgery has been found to alleviate the symptoms of severe Tourette’s syndrome.
Ten out of 11 patients with Tourette’s who received electrical stimulation through brain surgery showed a marked improvement in their condition. Electrodes were placed at specific locations to stimulate certain areas of the brain.
Overall, monitor tics in patients were reduced by 48%, and phonic tics were reduced by 57%.
