One of the four co-founders of the privacy-friendly online social network, Diaspora, has been reported dead.

Ilya Zhitomirskiy, 22, was one of four students at New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences to design Diaspora, a platform which differentiates itself from the highly centralised Facebook, by leaving ownership of whatever is posted with the users who posted it, and allowing users to host their own content.

The founders released a commercial version of Diaspora in 2010.
