The UK has seen a fourfold increase in the rate of diagnosed cases of coeliac disease in the past 20 years, but three quarters of sufferers remain undiagnosed according to new research by the University of Nottingham.
Coeliac UK said while an increased rate of diagnosis was good news, that 76% of coeliac cases are still undiagnosed is a “shocking statistic that needs urgent action”, including better availability of gluten-free foods in supermarkets.
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease affecting the lining of the stomach and can lead to conditions including bowel cancer and infertility.
