Is AEG an ancient genetic molecule?

AEG - a small molecule that can link into chains, which has been synthesised and studied by the pharmaceutical industry - has been discovered to occur naturally in cyanobacteria.

This has lead scientists to speculate that AEG may be an building block of an early genetic system that predates RNA.

Scientists use AEG as a backbone for peptide nucleic acids - synthesised molecules that are similar to DNA.
