More detailed map of Coral Sea produced

A new map of Australia’s Coral sea, detailing underwater reefs, mountains and canyons, has been produced by a James Cook University scientist.

Using a combination of satellite imagery for shallow-water features and sonar for deeper-water features, the map gives much more detailed information about the geomorphology of one million square kilometres of the Coral Sea Conservation Zone.

Major findings include a large number of underwater canyons, as well as several underwater mountains (or seamounts) which currently have no identifying names.
