New flu drug effective in lab models

A new antiviral drug has effectively prevented the spread of influenza in laboratory models.

It works by blocking the viruses ability to bind onto and remove sugars from the cell surface which causes it to mutate within the body.

The antiviral drug would play an important role as the first line of defence in controlling a pandemic while vaccines are prepared.

Researchers estimate it will take up to seven years before the drug is released.
