Plants are able to distinguish between pathogens and beneficial micro-organisms by detecting the different types of molecules the micro-organisms produce.
Researchers discovered that the chitin molecules produced by pathogens do not bind as strongly to the plant receptors as those produced by beneficial micro-organisms.
The plant responds differently depending on how strongly the chitin molecules bind - allowing the beneficial micro-organisms past their defences.
