Pro Vice-Chancellor (Future Learning), La Trobe University

Associate Professor Claire Macken is the Director of Flexible and Online Learning Development (FOLD) Projects at La Trobe. This project is to design and/or redesign subjects or courses at La Trobe to embed flexible online or blended learning activities or assessments. Claire is currently leading La Trobe's 'Radical Learning Project', imagining the future of teaching and learning beyond 2017. Radical Learning at La Trobe explores the possibilities for improving the quality of student learning, student engagement, flexibility and graduate outcomes. This also includes an exploration of the ways in which we define our student experience, the ways in which we make creative use of technology to support it, and the technical and design skills needed to deliver it.

Prior to her appointment at La Trobe in the latter half of 2011, Claire was the Associate Head of School (Teaching and Learning) and Associate Professor in the School of Law at Deakin University. Claire co-ordinated the Practical Skills program (with over 1200 enrolled students), as well as subjects Introduction to Law (first year students) and Equity & Trusts Law (final year students). For two years Claire was also seconded to the central Institute for Teaching and Learning at Deakin as a 'joint appointment' with the Faculty of Business and Law.

Claire is a nationally award-winning teacher, with an ALTC Australian Award for Teaching Excellence, an ALTC Australian Citation for her work in relation to the First Year Experience and an ADC Australian Leadership Award. Claire has a PhD in law, and is the author of five books as well as several book chapters and journal articles in both law and higher education.
