Gary has worked for CSIRO in areas concerning animal health for around 30 years. He has worked in the organisation’s bluetongue virus (BTV) team as well as their henipavirus research group. Gary was part of the team that identified the Nipah virus in Malaysia as well as a number of other bat borne pathogens.

Since 2010 Gary has jointly lead the the new and emerging zoonotic diseases team with Prof Linfa Wang.

With more than 15 years experience working in fully encapsulating suits at the highest level of biosecurity, biosafety level 4 (BSL4), Gary is the most experienced physical containment level four (PC4) operator in Australia.
