His publications have been widely cited and have been translated into several languages, including: Chinese, Danish, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Thai. Various international conferences have invited him to be a keynote speaker or selected his papers to be published as one of the ‘best papers’ or to be included in proceedings, conference books or special issues of journals. More than 20 refereed journals have appointed him to serve on their editorial boards.

Besides a series of Australian Research Council (ARC) discovery and linkage grants, he has won many other external grants including from the ARC; Economic & Social Research Council, UK; Bank of England; Australian Studies Centre; Foundation for Management Education, UK; British Academy; European Group for Organisational Studies; Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service, USA; Ford Foundation; Institute for Safety Compensation & Recovery Research; Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute; Australia-Korea Foundation; Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia/Australian Academy of the Humanities (Australia-Japan Program) and several other institutions and universities.

He is: President, Australian Labour and Employment Relations Association; Co-Convenor, Victorian Fellows, Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia; and Co-Chair: International Section, US Labor & Employment Relations Association (LERA). He has served as President of: Association of Industrial Relations Academics of Australia & New Zealand; Industrial Relations Society of Victoria; Australian & New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM); and International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management.

He has been an assessor for the ARC and also for the equivalent research councils in Canada, China, UK, USA. He has been a co-chief investigator on many competitive grant-funded projects. His international research collaborations include being Co-Leader of research projects on: airlines, education, hospitals, manufacturing, telecommunications, and unions as well as a range of enterprises in Australia internationally.

He was educated in the UK at Manchester University; London School of Economics & Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. He was a tenured academic at Durham University; has worked on research projects at Oxford and at Warwick universities; and at Imperial College, London. He was subsequently an academic in Australia at Queensland University; Queensland University of Technology (Director, ARC Key Centre in Strategic Management); Griffith University (Dean/Director, Graduate School of Management).

He is engaged with the world; he researches with and advises international organizations, private- and public-sector enterprises and other organizations. International agencies (e.g. the International Labour Organization/United Nations) have commissioned him to conduct projects. He has also been an adviser for governments in Australia, UK and elsewhere. He has served as a non-executive director on external boards e.g. in the fields of education, health and sport. He has served as an arbitrator for the Advisory, Conciliation & Arbitration Service, UK.

He has been an Examiner, Guest Speaker or Reviewer for universities and enterprises in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Indo-Pacific Region. He has been a guest faculty member at Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He is a Visiting Professor, Hertfordshire University and Newcastle University, UK. He has been a visitor at several other universities in Australia including: Macquarie University, Melbourne University and University of New South Wales; Cardiff University, UK, and at other universities.

He helps to attract high-quality recruits, visitors, grants and donations and generally to promote the interests of organisations that he is involved with. For example, he and helped to initiated the Prescott Family Foundation lectures (www.monash.edu/business/prescott-lecture-series) and the annual symposia that are held jointly by Monash and Melbourne universities to honour Emeritus Professor Joe Isaac (www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1ujyWFIlYE).

He has served the Department of Management, Monash University variously as: Director of Research; Discipline Leader: Human Resources & Employment Relations; Director, Master of Human Resource Management. He is also in the Monash Business Digitalisation Research Network and Monash Asia Institute.

He has supervised many PhD, Masters and Honours theses.
