Karl Smith completed his PhD in Sociology at La Trobe University and has taught in sociology, anthropology and communications at La Trobe, Monash and Victoria Universities. His publications include: Meaning, Subjectivity, Society: Making Sense of Modernity (2010, Brill); ‘“Deep Engagement” & Disengaged Reason’ (Australian Journal of Anthropology, 22: 40–55); ‘The Constitution of Modernity: A Critique of Castoriadis’ (European Journal of Social Theory, 12(4), Oct. 2009) and ‘Religion and the Project of Autonomy’ (Thesis Eleven no. 91, Nov. 2007).
