Lesleyanne Hawthorne

Lesleyanne Hawthorne (PhD, MA, BA Hons, Dip Ed, Grad Dip Mig Stud) is Professor (International Health Workforce) at the Australian Health Workforce Institute, University of Melbourne. She is a global expert on skilled migration policy, workforce demand, foreign credential recognition, labour market integration and retention, and the study-migration pathway. In the past five years Lesleyanne has undertaken commissioned research for UNESCO, WHO, the Canadian, New Zealand and Australian governments, the USA Migration Policy Institute, the International Organisation of Migration/ European Union, the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (APEC), and the Global Forum of Federations. Following a wide range of earlier studies, Australian projects in 2011-12 have included the most detailed assessment of health workforce migration to date (commissioned by Health Workforce Australia) and global assessment of English language skill standards for registration (for the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency). In 2005-06 Professor Hawthorne was appointed by Federal Cabinet to an Expert Panel of Three, to complete the most extensive evaluation of Australia’s skilled migration program since 1988. She has also completed the main projects to date on the study-migration pathway (in relation to medicine compared to 10 other fields).
