Associate Professor & Director, Health and Sustainability Unit, Boden Institute for Obesity, University of Sydney

Ruth Colagiuri is an Associate Professor in the Sydney Medical School and a Sydney Medical Foundation Fellow at the University of Sydney, Australia, where she is Director of the Health and Sustainability Unit at the University’s Boden Institute. She joined the University of Sydney in 2005 working at the Menzies Centre for Health Policy before moving to the Boden Institute in 2011.

Ruth has worked extensively in diabetes care and founded and directed the Australian Centre for Diabetes Strategies (1997-2005), and worked as a policy analyst in the NSW Health Department (1994 -.1996). She has co-authored 11 NHMRC guidelines and led the development of the:
• Australian National Diabetes Strategy (1998)
• Western Pacific Diabetes Declaration Plan of Action (2000)
• Diabetes Strategy for Sub Saharan Africa (2006)
• Call to Action on Diabetes (2010)
• Global Diabetes Plan (2011)

Ruth has a strong track record of successful work in Pacific Island countries and has undertaken numerous consultancies for WHO-WPRO, AusAID and other health agencies in a variety of developing countries including India, Africa, Mongolia, and the Pacific. Her primary interest is in the link between chronic diseases and economic and environmental sustainability.

She is a Vice-President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and founding member of the World Universities Network on Global Health Justice
