Raw sewage full of unknown viruses

Raw sewage could be home to thousands of novel, undiscovered viruses, some of which could have implications for human health.

Researchers looked at the genetic signatures of viruses present in raw sewage and detected 234 known viruses, including pathogens such as human papillomavirus.

While some of the viruses are already known to researchers, the vast majority of genetic signatures found belonged to unknown viruses.

Unknown viruses could have any number of effects, from serious human health impacts, to environmental impacts, all of which are, as yet, unknown.
