Species of fruit fly under threat from rising temperatures

Many species of the fruit fly are unable to adapt to predicted increases in global temperatures and may face extinction.

It was found that many species were constrained by what researchers are calling an “evolutionary straight-jacket”, meaning they are ill-equipped to deal with climate change.

After studying 100 flies from around the world, it was concluded that they could adapt to weather conditions of their environments. However in terms of increasing their heat resistance they possessed very little flexibility.

Through the study, researchers were able to identify species at tropical and mid-latitude as those most at risk.
