Strict protection helps sustain rainforests

Setting out strictly protected areas is more effective in combating deforestation in the Amazon than using designated removal zones.

Research conducted in Brazil shows that protected areas of forest incur far less deforestation than sustainable-use forest areas, which allow for controlled logging and resource extraction.

Areas designated for indigenous land management were also far less deforested than previously thought, despite deforestation pressures being high on an indigenous population in need of living space and as a source of wealth.
