The drug geldanamycin, commonly used to treat breast cancer, could provide a new treatment to prevent other cancers from spreading throughout the body.
Geldanamycin has been known to operate by attacking a protein associated with the spread of breast cancer, but a new study finds it also degrades a different protein that triggers blood vessel growth.
Researchers say stopping unwanted blood vessel growth is a key challenge in the battle against cancer, as this is how the tumour grows and spreads.
While there are already other drugs available that try to prevent this blood vessel growth, geldanamycin offers a novel and potentially safer solution because it suppresses the protein indirectly.
