An increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the ocean will not only have detrimental impacts on corals, but also the biodiversity of the marine invertebrates that inhabit them.
Research from the Australian Institute of Marine Science found ocean acidification (caused by an increase in CO2) leads to a decrease in leaf-like corals.
These leaf-like corals are key habitats for invertebrates such as crabs and octopi, so their loss will cause a cascade effect on reef biodiversity.
