Australian street gangs share many similarities with the early larrikin spirit of the Ned Kelly era.
Melissa Bellanta, a historian at the University of Queensland, has analysed larrikin culture from the 1860s to the 1930s.
Her study finds that “over-policing” has had a direct impact on the development of anti-police violence, and investigates how conceptions of a “larrikin” have changed over time.
