The scrapping of the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC) should not be seen as discouraging, considering the failure of the regulatory body in delivering on its stated objectives.
The existence of the ACNC had little bearing on the Charities Trust Score, a medium which calculates how much trust the public has in the not-for-profit sector. The presence of a national charity regulator had no effect on trust levels - which were already very high – even before the national regulator came into force.
The study deems the national regulator ineffective and welcomes the growth of independent charity watchdogs such as Charity Navigator, GiveWell and GuideStar, which it sees as the future direction of not-for-profit regulation.
