Alan Harvey was educated at the University of Cambridge and at ANU. After working in the USA and at Flinders University he moved to The University of Western Australia in 1984. He is now an Emeritus Professor in the School of Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology. His main experimental laboratory interests are in neurotrauma, neurodegeneration and neurotherapy, the work primarily focused on visual system and spinal cord injury but he also has an interest in Alzheimer's Disease. He is testing a range of approaches including gene therapy, pharmacotherapy, biopolymers and cell transplantation in an effort to enhance cell survival and regeneration of neurons after injury. He has published over 200 papers/book chapters and serves on several editorial boards. He is a Board member of the Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science. He is also passionate about music and over the past 50 years he has sung in choirs and played many concerts as a solo artist or as a member of various folk or rock bands. He currently sings with Perth Symphonic Chorus. Bringing his musical and neuroscience interests together, his book, 'Music, Evolution and the Harmony of Souls' is to be published by Oxford University Press early in 2017.
