Alan Harvey

Winthrop Professor of Anatomy and Human Biology at University of Western Australia

Summary

Alan Harvey was educated at the University of Cambridge and Australian National University. After working in the USA and at Flinders University he moved to The University of Western Australia in 1984. He is currently Professor and Deputy Head of the School of Anatomy and Human Biology. His main experimental laboratory interests are in neurotrauma, neurodegeneration and neurotherapy, the work primarily focused on the visual system but he also has interests in spinal cord injury and Alzheimer's Disease. He is testing a range of approaches including gene therapy, pharmacotherapy and cell transplantation in an effort to enhance cell survival and regeneration of neurons after injury. He has published over 150 papers/book chapters and serves on several editorial boards. He is chair of the International Programming Committee for the biennial Asia-Pacific Symposia on Neural Regeneration. He is also passionate about music and over the past 35 years he has sung in choirs and played many concerts as a solo artist or as a member of various folk or rock bands. He has the long-term ambition of bringing his neuroscience and musical interests together, intending to write a book about the role of music in human evolution and modern-day society.
