Graeme Hayes

I am Reader in Political Sociology and Head of the Department of Sociology and Policy at Aston University, which I joined in 2007. I teach and write about social movements, and about the sociology and politics of climate change. I'm most interested in the tactics and justifications of direct action and civil disobedience, and in the criminal trials of social movement activists. My most recent book is Breaking Laws: Violence and Civil Disobedience in Protest (with Isabelle Sommier and Sylvie Ollitrault, Amsterdam University Press, 2019). I was joint Editor of Environmental Politics from 2016-2023, and Editor in chief of Social Movement Studies from 2010-15.
