Dr Jessica Lake is a Senior Lecturer at Melbourne Law School at the University of Melbourne. She researches the regulation of expression and creativity (privacy, defamation, copyright) in the common law world from the early nineteenth century to the present, with a focus on gender. Her first book, The Face that Launched a Thousand Lawsuits: the American Women Who Forged a Right to Privacy, was published with Yale Uni Press in 2016. Her next book, focussing on the gendered history of defamation law and supported by an Australian Research Council grant, Special Damage: Slandered Women and Stained Whiteness, is forthcoming with Stanford University Press. In 2016-2017, Jessica held the Karl Loewenstein Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Political Science and Jurisprudence at Amherst College (USA). Prior to academia, she worked as a lawyer in the areas of media and commercial litigation.
