Paul is a Lecturer in the Center for Foreign Language Education and Research, Rikkyo University. He has formerly teaching and research positions at several other universities and departments in Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

His research and teaching focuses on peacebuilding, human rights, Israel-Palestine, and peacebuilding and development education through active learning. Specifically, his research covers areas of the Israel-Palestine conflict; peacebuilding; conflict resolution and Interactive Conflict Resolution (ICR); human rights; peacebuilding and development evaluation; peace journalism and communication; peacebuilding and development education through simulations, active learning and project studies; and how rights-based and relationship-based approaches to peacebuilding can be integrated within peacebuilding and development. For his research on Israel-Palestine Paul has been awarded the Isaac Roet Prize on Fostering World Peace Through a Better Distribution of World Resources, presented by the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Amsterdam and Economists for Peace and Security. Paul's writing and interviews have been published by a range of media outlets including the Conversation, the New York Times, United Press International, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Sydney Morning Herald, Dominion Post, New Zealand Herald, Waikato Times, commercial and independent TV and radio, as well as the Ethics Centre and the Sydney Peace Foundation.
