President at Australian Indigenous Doctors' Association

Summary

I am from the Wiradjuri people of NSW. I completed most of my schooling in the Hunter Valley, NSW and worked in a coal mine as a mine mechanic.

After sustaining an injury that would make it difficult to physically carry on with this work, I began studying psychology and biology at the University of Newcastle. However, before completing this course I was accepted into the University's medical school.

On completion of this degree I undertook my internship at Mackay, QLD. This was a great experience in a laid back town with a large Indigenous population. I returned to NSW on the Rural GP training program.

I have worked with the Tobwabba Aboriginal Medical Service since 2002. I would describe myself as an Aboriginal man who loves being a doctor. I love working one on one with my patients and find a source of satisfaction in the knowledge that, in my own small way, the work that I do contributes toward closing the gap between Indigenous and non Indigenous health outcomes.

In 2008, I pursued my other passion - making good doctors - and took on the position of Associate Professor, Indigenous Medical Education and Head of Discipline – Indigenous Health at Newcastle University.
