Prinola Govenden

Senior Lecturer, Department of Communication and Media, University of Johannesburg

Prinola is a Senior lecturer in the Department of Communication and Media. Her research interests are the intersection of power, race, and class in the modern media. She has an upcoming book: Power, Race & Class in the Post-Apartheid Print Media: Transformation in the first twenty years of democracy (1994 – 2014). Her further current projects focus on “Decolonising the internet in Africa: Fostering cultural inclusivity in the era of 4IR” and “Reimagining and decolonising public service broadcasting for Global South realities”. Prinola has previously worked as a Senior Research Fellow at the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (JIAS) where she started her Post-doctoral Fellowship, and has also worked in various capacities including as: a Visiting Lecturer for Wits Media Studies, Visiting Scholar at University of Oslo, Researcher at the Press Freedom Commission. Prinola has over six years of experience as a lecturer in the Higher education sector. Her academic work regularly features in magazines, newspapers, radio, TV, and online media.
