Richard Carney

Professor Richard Carney is associate professor of global studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. His teaching and research interests primarily focus on business-government relations in emerging economies. His book Authoritarian Capitalism: Sovereign Wealth Funds and State-Owned Enterprises in East Asia and Beyond (Cambridge University Press, 2018, Business and Public Policy Series) won the 2019 Masayoshi Ohira Memorial Prize. His next book is entitled China’s Chance to Lead: Acquiring Global Influence via Infrastructure Development and Digitalization. It is forthcoming with Cambridge University Press (Business and Public Policy series).

He has published numerous articles in leading journals of finance, international business and political science such as the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of International Business Studies, and the Review of International Political Economy.

Professor Carney has extensive experience teaching mid- and senior-level executives and government officials from across Asia, North America, Europe, and Australia. He has also been an advisor to the World Bank for its flagship project Businesses of the State.
