Tamuka Chekero

(HE/HIS)
Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Cape Town

Tamuka Chekero is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Pretoria within the Operationalizing Just Transition in Africa (OJTA) project, affiliated with the Centre for Advanced Studies. He obtained his PhD in anthropology from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa in July 2023. His doctoral dissertation reframes the current emphasis on nationality in migrant studies by asking how African migrants, regardless of their place of origin, make social worlds in their new homes. By eschewing the nationalistic framework that the state uses, he shows how migrants draw on diverse skills, including practices of conviviality, to overcome barriers. Tamuka was a part of the World Bank’s Africa Fellowship Program (2020), working in the Social Development Global Practice. He is also a 3-time recipient of the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa research grant and an ARUA Research Fellow. His broader research interests include mobility, social networks, conviviality and urban livelihoods
