Mark Swilling

Professor Mark Swilling is co-director of the Centre for Sustainability Transitions at Stellenbosch University. He coordinates the Masters and PhD programme in sustainable development in the School of Public Leadership. He has a PhD that focused on urban social movements in South Africa, specifically urban political protest and service delivery. He has published extensively on how to make cities sustainable (green cities), South Africa's green economy and renewable energy policies, Sustainable Development Goals, sustainable structural transformation in Africa, African urbanisation, global economic crisis, sustainability-oriented innovations, and transitions to sustainable/low carbon development at the global, African, South African and city level. He also specialises in informal settlements, specifically solutions and strategies for incremental upgrading.
